Pearl of the Orient

Everything was good about this reasturant i.e. the service and the food however you are paying a premuim for the food. There are better and cheaper places in Cardiff but if in the Bay you can't go wrong with this place

I've been to POTO a few times in the last couple of years and I definitely think it's gone down hill since I first went.
Initially, the food was pricey, but good quality. More recently, it's not been so great. The portions are still generous, but the food is greasy, lower quality and more artificial tasting. I think the reastaurant has become complacent due to it's success. It's not easy getting a table at the weekend, mainly due to tourists and theatre visitors. The decor is nice, but it's beginning to lose it's novelty appeal.
It's not worth the price anymore. The prices have stayed the same, but the quality has declined. It's a tourist trap and there are many other restaurants in Cardiff which give better value for money. I probably won't be returning.

I ate a pre-theatre dinner here last Saturday, and wasn't that impressed. I thought the food was good, but I have eaten better chinese takeway food. The squid that I ordered was salty and dripping with grease, and my partners spre ribs again, were too salty to eat.
I felt that my partner and I were rushed to eat and get out as soon as possible. The service was average at best, and I did begrudge paying a 10% service charge automatically included on my bill.
It is a beautifully decorated eating area, very authentic, and there is a pleasant atmosphere, although our table was right on the end of a row and we felt like we were 'in the way' or passing waiters.
It was on the pricey side, but our bill was pumped up considerably by the 10% service charge.
I think the Pearl of the Orient has got slightly complacent; because of its position within the bay it is always busy, and people will always flock there as they would to any chinese restaurant in the same position. The restaurant needs to realise that there are more and more class restaurants opening in Cardiff all the time, and to compete, it needs to keep an edge which it currently doesn't have.

Good but pricey. Went midweek for my son's birthday and it was wonderful. Went again on Cup Final Saturday and it was manic. Even though I'd booked we had to wait and were put in a side room. Food was lovely though. Portions are generous. Veg spring rolls are best I have ever tasted.Polite service. Wine is expensive.
