Merola's

I wish that all restaurants were like Merolas. The food is fresh, the service fabulous, the atmosphere warm and the prices very reasonable. I love the place and frankly, it runs rings round certain posh Bay eateries that charge an arm and a leg.

i have known spiro and nick for many years they and their families have worked so hard to get the restaurant to the fantastic venue it now is. i have never had a reason to complain about the terrific food and ambience of the place even the take away pizzas (self designed) are fantastic, just wish i could get there more often (to empty the peroni fridge) bottle opener supplied by spiro.
To be honest it was a sad day when i had to leave grangetown because of work i miss Merola's badly.

The interior is 'raffia-bottle' standard cozy; the main courses are not bad; the wine is terrible; the staff are absolutely lovely. So why eat here, right? The pizzas. The pizzas are actually extremely good -- a 10! -- universally adored by the whole family. My girlfriend is now addicted to artichoke, anchovy, garlic and oregano ... mmmmm!
What I do nowadays is order the pizza to go because I like to drink wine with it and can't stand what they have to offer.

We visited this restaurant on the strength of the reviews. Italian restaurants in Cardiff can be a let down. This place is a diamond in the rough. A warm welcome & a genuine family feel. The restaurant is cosy & kitsch but that only adds to it's charms and brought back happy memories of an off the beaten track restaurant in Venice years ago...
The highlights of the meal were the crevettes, simply cooked & presented, they tasted even better than they looked and the home-made tiramisu which was the best ever. - not oversweetened, thick & creamy & enough alcohol to be tasty but not reduce the sponge to slop. Personally, I would have liked some basil on the bruschetta & a sprinkle of rosemary on the saute potatoes, but this is a very minor observation.
It's clearly a very popular place used by families out celebrating special ocassions as well as couples just out for a relaxed & happy meal. We are looking forward to returning with friends in the near future.

i love merolas (but they did use what must have been frozen or tinned spinach i my calzone) the pastas and pizzas are good. the seating is a little bit squished but that adds to the fun. the food is tasty and reasonable. it is not fine dining but a cosy friendly restaurant with steaming plates of comfort food.

A fab evening with attentive staff, plenty of light hearted banter and a friendly family atmosphere. The food was great as was the house wine with a wide ranging menu guaranteed to please just about anyone. The staff went out of their way to made my elderly parents feel like a million dollars in a fun, friendly, non-patronising kind of way - priceless! Merola's is a little gem and highly recommended.

I have no idea why the person below has written such a bad review. He/she obviously has no idea what people want when they visit a restaurant.
A warm greeting, wonderful food and fantastic service. Reasonable prices and a lovely cosy feel to the place.
And what a ridiculous remark of "these people have obviously never tasted Italian food before" - I think you will find that most people have tried Italian food in their lifetime from a very young age! Get over your pompous self - it may not be how the food is in Italy (which that person has probably never even visited) but unless you are extremely dull, please remember this restaurant is based in Cardiff and would not have the kind of resources and ingredients you may find in Italy.

Please pay no heed to the reviews below, they are clearly posted by people who have never eaten Italian food before.....
Anyway, this is a decent enough trat for the area, not a place for an occasion. If you want really good food go elsewhere.

Merolas in my opinion is the best Italian in Cardiff. Staff are Polite and Friendly. Food is fab, especially the Italian Pepper Sausage for starters with Garlic Bread. They have a good selection on the menu from create your own pizzas to chicken dishes, pastas, Steaks etc. All for a very reasonable price.
The atmosphere is fab, especially at the weekends and Holiday Occasions.
