The "Snarling Gaul" has gone but so has the Chef. Many changes so it is time to see see how it all falls out. One point to note, however, is that the last couple of times I've been was on a Tuesday evening - I would suggest avoiding this as it appears they use Tuesdays for the least experienced staff (understandable but avoid it as it's just not the same sleek service as later in the week).

I am amazed at some of the negative comments on here! I have been going to this restaurant at 3/4 times a year for 10 years and, whilst it's not as personal as it was when staffed almost exclusively by the owners themselves (yes, there is a degree of truth in the comment about the relatively new "snarling gaul") the food remains consistently the best anywhere in Cardiff and the general atmosphere as good as it gets unless you're by the sea.

Over the last 12 months prices have come down from what they were and this just makes all the better value. It's always my first choice for a special night out or to take visitors to if they appreciate good fine and an excellent wine list.

First I should say that your average quoted price is somewhat out of kilter with my own experience. I paid about £120.00 alc for dinner for two including wine and excluding a tip for dinner and around £60-70 for lunch.

As for the restaurant. The ambiance of the room itself is spot on for me; classically modern and nicely laid out with an airy little bar.

The food is exactly as the proprietors’ bill it, modern French/British. It is all well conceived, prepared and presented. Whilst not by means avant guarde the menu is as 'out there' as I feel Cardiff can comfortably handle. Certainly a notch above its nearest local competition. In my estimation Le Gallois serves the finest food in Cardiff.

So why don't I eat there? In a word: Service. What on earth would possess a restaurateur to employ a diminutive Gaul to sneer whist serving his guests? I am sure many of us have experienced this occasionally. I’m sure you know what I mean. Just awful.

Went there for a lunch time and could only have the "Christmas" menu which wasn't very Christmassy, the portions were extremely small and vastly overpriced. The coffee was terrible. I can't believe that anyone could think this is the best restaurant in Cardiff, it's trading on it's reputation I think.
